Societal Unity

Introduction: Tensions in our global society have been rising consistently over the past 40 years. This has taken a steeper curve since the 9/11 atrocity. A great deal of work, effort, emotion and enthusiasm has gone into the commitment towards maintaining peace, harmony and respect in our society since the 9/11 attack on the World Trade Centre. The rising tensions that resulted from this act of terrorism have been tackled by men and women of all faiths and persuasions. This has been done through returning to our usual routines and daily existence and re-establishing all of the usual norms of our society. Faith organisations and community groups returned to the very basic of human principals and re-established an understanding of dignity and respect amongst us all. All of these words are easily said. They have taken great maturity and strength of character to deliver. People and our society have existed together over centuries on this planet of ours. We have found common ground, understanding on key elements of our opinions and beliefs and possessed the vision and maturity needed to co-exist. We have discussed and debated each other’s views and we have found common ground where we can live together in harmony. There have been instances of tension nonetheless and we have had to tackle them head on and seek a way through the complexities. Despite the challenges of war in our history we still strive to better ourselves and our society for the benefit of all. There is no doubt that conflict has taken place in the society that we speak of across the centuries. It is with this in mind that this campaigns seeks to ensure that the environment for conflict is kept at bay and instead a positive and fruitful set of circumstances are in place at all times. Only with enlightenment and understanding can we achieve peace and harmony. The communications and technology around us in this age of the internet ensures that our world is getting closer together all the time. Information moves at speeds that could not be comprehended just 10 years ago. At this time of speed and efficiency, mankind stills finds that there is not enough time. During the course of our hurried state we fail to take the time to understand each other. This campaign seeks to remove itself from the sound bites and spin and return to a stage where we take the time to listen carefully to each other. The method for this will be several. We will meet and discuss as well as send each other quick pieces of information through social media. The quality of our information is to be such that we are able to attain an understanding of how we are to achieve our unity. This will be part of the discussion that will be held at our societal unity conferences. Methodology: There are to be four keys areas for the methodology for this campaign. We will be looking to utilise the skills and attributes of all our partners to ensure that the campaign receives the widest possible scope of communications: These areas will be: 1. Conferences and Seminars; 2. Talks at Partner Events; 3. National and Local Interfaith Week 2010; 4. Newsletter; 5. eShot & Website;

Conferences & Seminars: Rhetoric is often frowned upon as a concept suggesting that this may be superficial or even thin on belief. Nevertheless rhetoric has been the basis for many movements and the method for raising attention to causes. In instance of our society we have witnessed the rhetoric of hate and intolerance both from people purporting to represent religions and the far right of the political spectrum. The time has come to replace the rhetoric of hate with the rhetoric of peace. There will be a series of conferences held over the course of the next 12 months that will concentrate their message on unity, peace and harmony amongst us all. The first of these conferences will be held in Birmingham followed by an event at the House of Lords early next year. A third event will be held prior to the 9/11 memorial supporting this occasion and supporting the families of those that fell victim. We have planned to hold a conference on 27 November 2010 at 9.30am at the West Midlands Fire Service HQ in Birmingham. This conference is the first of a series of events that will take place between November 2010 to September 2011. It’s aims are to bring together the “Silent Majority” that lives together in peace and harmony. The time has come for the millions of law abiding and peace loving people of the world to say “enough is enough”. This event brings together all faith groups, political organisations, community groups along with public sector and charity organisations together in a single platform. We will receive speeches from leading members of the major faiths of our community along with social and political figures. Each of the events will be held in the same format to enable statements of support and guidance to be provided to everyone. A charter has been drafted to be the focus of the discussions and debates at the event and to act as an action of each event. All those attending will be invited to sign up to the charter and enabling the campaign to grow from strength to strength.
